A Dose of Unreality

As you may have figured out from my home page, I'm also a big fan of Harry Potter. To be completely honest, I became a fan of JKR's work long before I did with Tolkein's. I had read the Hobbit in around 5th grade, and never started on the Lord of the Rings until a year or two ago. I still haven't finished the entire trilogy, what with finishing up high school and starting my first year at college.

On this page, I will post my reviews of the recent releases of movies, books, whatever. Basically, here I will rant and ramble about whate'er the 'ell I bloody well want to!

"I wanted a perfect ending. Now I've learned, the hard way, that some poems don't rhyme, and some stories don't have a clear beginning, middle, and end. Life is about not knowing, having to change, taking the moment and making the best of it, without knowing what's going to happen next."

The following contains spoilers for Order of the Phoenix! Read at your own risk!!

The Order of the Phoenix was the first book I went to the release party for. That was definitely an experience I'll always remember!! It was a lot of fun seeing all those people brought together for a book...gave me some idea what it must have been like when the Beatles were huge back in the sixties. I think the most memorable part of that evening was seeing these two little old ladies who must have been at least in their 70s come in to get the books. They were obviously sisters, as they looked so much alike. But seeing their smiles as they got their house tickets for their books, that was something. Made me smile to see that a book could be enjoyed by all generations. Someday, I hope to be able to do that.

Well, once my brother and I got our books, we drove home. As soon as I got home, I dove right in, staying up until dawn. On saturday, my mum made me take a break and go grocery shopping, but as soon as I got home, I was right back at it. Another night spent reading until dawn! Almost all of sunday was spent reading, and I finally finished it at 1am that night. And then the denial began. Sirius was dead. I couldn't believe it. I'd recognized the foreshadowing throughout the book, but still I denied it. Well, that is what brings about the banner below. I'm not the only one denying Sirius' death. In us, he lives on!

We also met some interesting new characters in OotP, including Tonks. Or should I say, Nymphadora Tonks. Oy, what a name, eh? Although we don't see a whole of her, we are definitely given a very good introduction to a character who is not only interesting, but really rather cool imho. She reminds me a bit of my best friend since kindergarden, Carly. Plus, she obviously has a very good heart, much like her cousin Sirius. Her, Sirius, Molly and a distant uncle seem to be the only decent direct members of the Black family. I was surprised to find out about Sirius' family tree; he is obviously nothing like the majority of his family, and it's no wonder he ended up running away/leaving home when he was 16. Another new character, Professor Umbridge is quite the opposite of Tonks. A stuffy, dumpy looking woman, she proves herself to be quite a bitch. Rotten to the core, and obviously possessed of some sort of Dark Arts, she starts in on students and coworkers alike, trying to implement "new ministry laws for the betterment of the childrens' educations." Hmph, betterment my arse. She's a horrid teacher, a miserable excuse for a person, and a dispicable waste of oxygen. Not that I have any sort of vendetta out against the woman or anything. *spits on the ground* Miserable bitch. Hehe, on a happier note, it was great to see a lot more character development of Ginny, Fred and George Weasley. Ginny is growing into a very strong willed, intelligent witch; a force to be reckoned with. And the twins show that while they are notorious mischief makers, they have a somewhat dangerous intelligence and a keen sense of what is right. I loved it when they made their final exit, leaving Umbridge to clean up the debris. The fact that Flitwick left part of their swamp in the hallway as a memorial to their deeds shows that they were well respected and liked by teachers as well as fellow students. Luna Lovegood is a very, well...unique addition to the team. The same age as Ginny, she seems to be quite off in her own world, but shows shocking insight in many instances. We shall have to keep an eye on her! And Neville truly shows why he was sorted into Gryffindor. Standing up to Death Eaters, confronting Voldemort, and even admitting to what happened to his parents and where they are, Neville showed incredible courage, strength and intelligence. When he knows he cannot continue on, he tells Harry to leave him behind, knowing that it could well mean his own death. That is true courage, knowing what is likely to happen to you, and still doing what needs to be done. *sigh* Poor Harry, he is a very angry and frustrated young man in this book. So much has happened to him in such a short period of time, and not enough has been explained to him. Being left with the Dursleys for yet another summer, and not hearing anything from Hermione and Ron didn't help him deal with everything. Poor lad really needs to sit down and just talk with someone about all that's happened. First he lost his parents and had to grow up with the Dursleys, then he saw one of his classmates killed and had to carry the body back; and then he looses Sirius, his godfather and closest thing to family he's ever had. He definitely needs a hug or two or three!! All in all, a very good read, 'though I still don't like the fact that JK killed off Sirius. So therefore, I shall disbelieve!! Mwahahahahaha! *insane cackling*

9th July, 2003: Pirates of the Caribbean Opens!

Woot! I went to see PotC at 7pm this evening with my mum in Geneseo. What a great movie! I read the review on it in the paper this morning, and Jack Gardner only gave it a 4. Don't know what he's talking about, I thought it was rather brill myself. Johnny Depp plays Captain Jack Sparrow as a jaded, half-baked, Keith Richard-esque pirate who is rather down on his luck. His character reminded me of my friend (and ex! lol) Aaron...kinda freaky actually. Orlando Bloom's character, Will Turner is very different from his previous role as elven archer Legolas, but was just as well played. Plus, he gets the girl! The lucky wench. Which brings me to Keira Knightley(of "Princess of Thieves") portrays governer's daughter Elizabeth Swan, obviously, the love interest of Will Turner. All in all, a great flick. I definitely recommend it, and will hopefully see again in the near future! Oh, and don't forget FIGHTY DEAD PIRATES!!! bwahahahaha!! *falls over giggling madly* Bagenders rocks. 'Nuff said.

20th July, 2003

Well, I finally saw "Finding Nemo" last night at the Silver Lake Drive-In. Let me just say that this is a killer movie! Absolutely brill! Definitely different with the computer animation, yet still within the influence of classic disney. A great blending of the two. Like "Lilo & Stitch" before it, this movie is set in present day, although in "Nemo" the setting is in the coral reefs of Australia and a small dentist's office in Sydney. Like many parents, Marlin fears for the safety of his only surviving child, Nemo. This has led him to be terribly over-protective; to the point of driving young Nemo to swim into unsafe waters. This is the cause of the ENTIRE movie-Marlin's search for his son Nemo, who has been "captured" by said dentist in Sydney. This dentist caught Nemo with the intent of giving him to his neice as a gift. This "child" seems to be the spawn of "Bride of Chucky" meets "Psycho" meets Satan. Did I mention she's rather evil and ugly as all sin? Heh. So anyroad, on his search to find his son, Marlin meets up with the terribly absentminded, but well-intentioned Dorie. Dorie rocks. Especially since she reminds me a hella lot of my mate Dorie! *g* Then we meet Crush. Crush is a 150 year old sea turtle. Who references the Beatles. Therefore, we loves him! Aside from the fact that he's just wicked funny and cool. All in all, I would definitely say this is a great movie! I really enjoyed, and will eventually be buying it once it comes out on DVD.

15 November, 2004: College kills yer brain

Wow, I've been quite the slacker on updating. Anyroad, here's my rant for now.

Term I of my sophmore year has been, well, interesting to say the least. My roommate this year rocks as she's me best mate, and we have almost all of our classes together, which makes doing homework quite a bit easier. I've met some interesting new people this year-the freshman class is certainly a varied one. Dorie an' I have sort of adopted a few freshmen pets, but none seem to be really clicking like last year, which is kinda sad. But in any case, we have gotten to know some fun people, some of which now scare the hell outta us, but that's ok. What would life be without psycho people who have the potential to become stalkers, eh? *snort* Speaking of stalkers, Stalker-boy seems to have basically laid off, although since he's still in GASP and still works at the computer centre, I occasionally have to deal with him. And he still sends odd, freaky-ass vibes every once in a while. Dorie an' I have succeeded in confusing quite a few people, which is always fun-especially when they try to "label" or "figure out" our relationship. Mwahahaha, fucking with peoples' heads is so much fun!

Winter has finally struck, rather a bit later than is the norm for New York. Nonetheless, it still sucks. Stupid craptacular cold weather. Grr.

What sucks this is year is the absence of our fearless leader, Patty. It really sucks when people graduate. But thanks to the shibbiness of the internet, we're able to keep in touch, which is great. We miss hanging out, but we're thinking of trying to organize a return trip to the Sterling Renaissance Festival this upcoming summer, which would be a lot of fun.

Well, I think I've rambled enough, so I shall bid thee adieu. Until next time I remember to update this damn site, ta-ra!

2 May 2004: Holy Not Updating Batman!

*looks at last entry on the page* Wow, I guess it's been quite some time since I last updated this. Sorry about that folks. This school has been wicked hectic, and has kept me very busy. As well as not very into working on this website. Since the last update, I've seen quite a few different films, as well as going to see "Wicked" in NYC back in March. Now it's third term already, and this year is almost over. Crazy to think now, considering that most of the year as practically crawled by; for a while, it felt like time had come to a stand-still. *sigh* In any case, I think this I'll end it here for now. ^_^
